Orphans need help to rebuild their home
“We are waiting to hear from them on when the construction will start.”
Duduza – Four orphaned children of Thabethe are pleading to the residents to help them to rebuild their home in Masechaba Section in Extension Three.
Their RDP house was destroyed by a tornado three years ago but years of pleading to ward councillors for help was fruitless.
The family is currently forced to share a one-room shack.

Portia Thabethe says their three-room RDP house was damaged by a tornado for the first time in 2011.
“Many of the houses in the area were badly damaged and the municipality offered to rebuild them.
“Our house was cracked but we were still able to live in it.
“In 2015 we experienced another tornado and this time it crumbled to the ground.
“We informed the councillor about our situation and we were told we needed to register the house in our names because the owner, my mom, had died.
“We did all that and reported back to the councillor’s office who referred us to the indigent office.
“We have since waited and were told the City doesn’t have a budget to build our house at the moment and we should wait for the next financial year,” she says.

Portia says they are pleading to anyone who can help them to rebuild their home to come forward.
“We will appreciate any help that they can get because they cannot afford to rebuild the house themselves,” she adds.
In his comment, Ward 98 councillor Tefo Motaung says he is aware of the two houses which were damaged by a tornado.
“In the recent site visit with the officials from the Department of Human Settlement, they have made a commitment to rebuild the houses soon.
“We are waiting to hear from them on when the construction will start,” he says.
