Man stages his own kidnapping

Tsakane – A 29-year-old man was arrested for staging his own kidnapping on Friday.

The suspect was reported missing on September 2 at Tsakane Police Station.

Tsakane police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu says a case of missing person was opened, investigations were conducted and a search was done by police without any luck.

“In the process of investigation, police were informed by the family that they have received a SMS from the alleged victim’s phone, demanding money before the ‘victim’ can be released.

“Police had to involve more SAPS role players, including negotiators and cellphone tracking companies.

“It was later discovered that the victim was not missing, but was in Sebokeng out of his own free will and he is the one who is demanding money from his family,” she explains.

Mngomezulu says they would like to warn the community not to report false cases or pretend that they are victims because this is a criminal offence and the offenders will be charged with perjury.

“This act is also misleading the police in terms of directing the state resources instead of using the resources where they are genuinely needed,” she adds.
