Elderly couple asks for help with collapsing wall

KwaThema – The Msibe family says they are living in constant fear that their house will cave in on them.

Emily Msibe (66) and her husband, Freddy (73), have been living in this house for more than 40 years.

The house is, according to councillor Zanele Nyakale of Ward 78, one of the first houses to be built before the development of RDP houses in the area.

Last year in October the top part of one of the walls in the kitchen collapsed.

“The walls have cracks all around the house, last year the wall in the kitchen collapsed and the window broke as well.

“This happened while it was raining heavily.

“Every time it rains we start to panic because this house can collapse at any time.

“We are scared that we will die in this house one of these days,” says Msibe.

They say they have been made promises by the councillor, but nothing has been done.

“My husband reported the matter to our ward councillor, but up to now nothing has been done.

“We do not know what to do anymore, I am deeply sadden and scared at the same time,” she adds.

Nyakale says she is aware of the issue.

“I am aware of the situation; the complaints regarding houses in this area have been there long before I became a councillor.

“The provisional office had promised to fix these houses but failed, even now they have been telling me about the budget,” says Nyakale.

She adds that they are trying to deal with the situation as best as possible.

“We don’t want any injuries to occur; therefore, we have prioritised the matter and are appealing to the public, especially local businesses, to assist us in order to help the couple.

“Most of the houses in this area are occupied by elderly people and they do not have the strength to fix their house issues,” she adds.

They couple says they are still paying rates and would appreciate any form of help.
