Workers down tools over contracts

Duduza – General workers at the Duduza Customer Care Centre on Monday downed tools over contract and payment disputes with their contractor.
Workers claim that there have been some inconsistencies in terms of payment and that they were promised a three-year contract.

“We were promised a three-year contract which was meant to have started immediately after our three months’ probation.
“But now the contractor wants us to sign a 12-month contract, and we were told to expect our wages on the last day of the month, which is not always the case and should it fall on a weekend we do not get our money on time.
“We were also not paid over the Christmas holidays,” says employee Siboniso Mbhamali.
Workers say they have been making arrangements to meet with the Dloziman Cleaning Services management, but without any success.

Managing director Portia Songo says: “I never promised them a three-year contract because we as service providers do not have a three-year contract with the municipality.
“Those saying I have been refusing to meet with them are not being truthful because I had agreed to meet on February 21, before they decided to strike.
“In terms of payments, payments are processed on the last day of the month.”
