Mzolo family from Duduza marched to Pholosong Hospital to demand answers for baby’s death
“We want a full report of what happened to the baby and steps taken against officials who are responsible for this."
Tsakane – The distraught Mzolo family, supported by the EFF, marched to Pholosong Hospital on March 3 to demand answers for the death of their newborn baby.
It is alleged on February 2, new mother Zandile Mzolo’s (21) baby died during birth at the hospital.
The hospital advised her and her family to go home and make funeral arrangements for the baby.
On their return to collect the body two days later, they were allegedly told the body was disposed of with some of the rubbish and later burnt.
Family member Thembane Mzolo says they are tired of waiting for the hospital to deliver on their promises of affording Zandile psychological help.

“We have been waiting and weeks have passed without hearing from them or being given a proper explanation as to how the baby’s body ended up in the rubbish being burnt.
“We could not believe what we were hearing
“How did the body of a baby end up in the rubbish bin to start with?
“We made arrangements with the hospital that we were prepared to bury our baby, but they decided to be negligent and depose of it without informing us.”
Thembane says after lodging a complaint with the hospital, the CEO, Dr Ashley Mthunzi, assured them he will get to the bottom of the matter and report back to them, but a month later they are still waiting.
“We want a full report of what happened to the baby and steps taken against officials who are responsible for this.
“The mother was promised to receive psychological treatment, but no arrangements have been made to date.
“She is still traumatised.
“She can’t sleep or eat and all she does is cry.
“We are demanding financial compensation from the hospital because we feel that our concerns are not taken seriously,” she adds.
Addressing the community during the march, the CEO said they have committed themselves to helping the family.

“We have sent a delegation from the hospital to apologise and share our condolences with the family.
“We have committed to offering the mother psychological help.
“I have urged the family to come to my office should they need any help,” he explains.
Mthunzi assured the family that they will ensure the mother will be sent for psychological treatment and the arrangements will be communicated with the family.
“We will also share the channels which the family can follow to lodge a complaint and officially demand compensation,” he adds.
