KwaThema – The Gauteng Department of Education, with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, endorsed by the MEC and the Premier of the Province, are relaunching the Wednesday Schools Sports Indaba.
School governing bodies (SGBs) in the Gauteng East region are invited to a meeting at KwaThema Skills Centre from 9am on Saturday to discuss the relaunch of the league, which will include 400 participating schools in the province.

Bhekizizwe Siluma, president of School Sports Confederation, says: “The reason for relaunching this initiative is because schools will now also be assessed based on their extracurriculur activities.
“In the past, we had challenges with the United Schools Sports Associations where educators were overlooked because the department only assessed schools based on their academics.”
He adds that SGBs will have to work hard to ensure the initiative becomes a success.
“SGBs play a very important role in the school committees because they are part of the formulation process.
“If schools have already formed sports committees they must bring with them to the meeting a list of names of the members, proof of registration, along with the sport codes they have enrolled in or want to participate in.
“We are urging all members of SGBs, irrespective of their association, to attend this meeting,” he says.

He says sport is very important to the development of children.
“It is important that we encourage our children to engage in physical activities.
“Remove them from parks because people have turned those places into a negative playground.
“We need to ensure they reach their full potential,” says Siluma.
