GBV fight tightened in Gauteng

Duduza – Victims of gender-based violence (GBV) were encouraged to speak out during the launch of GBV Brigade Programme at the Duduza Community Hall on Monday. Gauteng MEC of Community Safety Faith Mazibuko said it is about time we all join the fight against GBV. During the launch, the brigades embarked on a door-to-door walkabout in the area of Duduza where they engaged with community members and encouraged them to be ambassadors of safety against GBV by reporting all incidents to law enforcement.

Mazibuko said one death is too many and declared that the initiative will be available across the province. “The foot soldiers in the war against GBV will be going into communities to encourage victims to speak out and seek help,” she said. She further warned against secondary victimisation when assisting victims.

Ekurhuleni District SAPS acting commander Brig Johannes Shabangu reiterated the commitment by police to work with any stakeholders in the fight against GBV. “We will leave no stone unturned to remove the perpetrators from the streets,” he said.
