Young people continue to fight food insecurity
“Our goal is to provide a sustainable food supply to over 1 000 families per month."
Kwa-Thema – The Keamogetswe M Foundation served food to over 200 families in KwaThema on Friday. “Many have lost jobs and absolute poverty still stalks heavily within the perimeters of our community,” said Keamogetswe Masike, founder of the NPO. “Despite the challenges, we are still able to support 10 early childhood development centres and local feeding schemes in public schools with food. “Our goal is to fight hunger through the provision of a sustainable system that will keep the needy fed on a daily basis.”

On September 19, the foundation will launch a ‘sit and dine’ soup kitchen that will operate on a weekly basis, providing food to needy families and individuals. “Our goal is to provide a sustainable food supply to over 1 000 families per month. I think the best way of doing such good is getting the working middle class involved; therefore, those who understand the struggles of their neighbours,” he said. According to Masike, more than 500 child-headed families have been fed since the programme started. “Those families became a priority as nutrition plays a pivotal role in the lives of the young,” he said One of the foundation’s main goals remains to close the gap of food insecurity in communities throughout Ekurhuleni.
