Dance school closes due to poor commitment

Our Tango Dancing School has shut its doors in Kwa-Thema due to a lack of interest by students and parents.

Kwa-Thema – The lack of commitment by students and parents has led to the closure of Our Tango Dancing School in Kwa-Thema.
The dance school operated for three years, teaching young people the art of contemporary dance.
Dance teacher and founder Penwell Nhlapo had volunteered his services and skills to empower young people in the township.
He explained that over the years, he identified how young people were competing across the globe in the sport and wished to see Kwa-Thema represented.
“I believed in their capabilities. When we started, we had a fairly good number of attendees, but over the years the numbers have dwindled. I tried to revive the classes after lockdown but only a handful of students responded.
“Even with the small number of students, their commitment and attendance were very poor,” he explained.

Penwell said he decided to put the classes on the backburner in Kwa-Thema and focus on other areas where there is better commitment.
“It is heartbreaking to see parents in the townships not taking an interest in their children’s extra-mural activities. They don’t want to be involved, refuse to attend competitions, pay for classes or buy their outfits, especially for competitions. This makes it impossible for the students to commit,” he said.
Nhlapo said it is unfortunate that the sport is slowly dying in parts of Ekurhuleni, as young people are more focused on social media and drugs.
