Learners urged to report abuse and criminal activities

Tsakani – Learners from Mega Primary School in Extension 22 attended an awareness campaign hosted by the police on Tuesday.
The awareness campaigns in schools will continue for the rest of the month as part of Child Protection Month activities.
The learners were cautioned about bullying, unruly behaviour and urged to speak up if abused.
The talk, given by the members of the police, Department of Community Safety, Tsakani Crisis Centre, COGTA, GBV brigades and school social workers, came after they received complaints about the learners’ behaviour.
Tsakani police spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu said they used the opportunity to speak to the learners about issues affecting them like abuse, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.

“We want to ensure that learners know where to report crime and abuse and to find the police approachable. Often young people are afraid to report a crime because the perpetrators threaten their lives or their loved ones.
“We are hoping through these school talks that the abused learners will come forward or report the matter to an adult who will report it to the police,” she explained.
Mngomezulu urged adults to report all forms of abuse to the police and not to try to cover for the perpetrators.
“It is a criminal offence to cover up criminal activities and those implicated will face the law and be charged accordingly,” she added.
