Local learner awarded an international scholarship

Tsakani – African School for Excellence star learner Thakgatso Ramaila (19) has received a partial academic scholarship to study abroad, covering only a certain percentage of his tuition fees.
He has been accepted to study applied physics at Siena College in Loudonville, New York. This opportunity is close to the teen’s dream to learn more about science and technology.
“I have always been curious about how technology works. I chose this course because it explains the physics of engineering. It is more focused on science, hence it is partial engineering.
“Through this course, I will get to explore metallic parts,” explained Ramaila.

Though he couldn’t contain his excitement, Ramaila said he is nervous to start a new life in a different country. He will be leaving South Africa in August.
“It’s a mixture of excitement and nervousness at the same time. Excited because I will be studying something that I love,” he said.
He believes that studying abroad will provide more opportunities in this field.
To be accepted at the college, some requirements included writing the Cambridge examinations, which the school provides.
“They want to see how you are as a person. Are you motivated? Are you also dedicated? So yes, I think they saw that in me. I had to write an admissions essay in which I believe I did quite well,” he added.
He is pleading with the community to assist him with his crowdfunding campaign.
With the assistance of the school they will be setting up a GoFundMe page but they also urge anyone who would like to assist to come forward.

“The next big expense is flight tickets, so if there is anyone who would like to assist it will be great.”
School principal Nonhlanhla Masina said, “Not limiting people, anything you feel will make a difference in our former learner’s journey will be welcomed.
“We’re excited and very proud of his performance, and we would do our best to support him in the next step because his success is our success. We are hoping that he will be able to set an example for others because we are actively encouraging students to consider colleges abroad.
“What we ultimately envision as a school is a place where it doesn’t matter that you are a township learner, or you’re born in a low-income community, people notice you and engage with you as a talented person,” she said.
