Consumers’ rights take front row seat

The local consumers were educated on electricity tariffs and billing.

Kwa-Thema – The Ward 74 community was educated on the role of the National Energy Regulatory of South Africa (NERSA), on June 1, at the Republic Trinity Church, in conjunction with the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
Attendees learned more about how NERSA regulates electricity, how tariffs are determined, electricity saving tips and consumer rights and responsibilities.
The customer education workshop was also aimed at encouraging public participation.
Customer education officer Mmoni Serumula emphasised that education is important as it enables consumers to exercise their rights.

“The workshop was great. I feel that it went well though we didn’t get the numbers we wanted in terms of attendance but are grateful to those who made it.
“Such campaigns are important as they are meant to empower the masses.
“When people are empowered they are able to make sound decisions because they have knowledge,” explained Serumula.
She urged communities to partake in public participation meetings.
Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane said other stakeholders must also follow in the footsteps of NERSA.
“We need departments to come and engage and educate the public about what informs the decisions that they make before they even make those decisions, so that our people can also understand and play their part.
“Also, initiatives as these put emphasis on the important of public participation,” said Simelane.
