Tsakani – The Battle Ground Wrestling Club came back with 15 medals from the Ekurhuleni trials that were held in Alberton on Saturday.
This is a massive improvement from the gold, silver and two bronze medals they won at the Johnnie Reitz Big 5 Tournament on August 6 in Pretoria.
According to head coach Mpho Mad, this is an indication that they are prepared for the upcoming national championships.
“At the Johnnie Reitz tournament I was expecting more medals but we failed to bring more than we could. With more than 700 participants I must say we did our best and gave our all.
“After that competition, we went back to the drawing board and worked on our shortcomings. Coming into the Ekurhuleni trials we were ready,” said Madi.

She added they are happy with the results and will now be focusing on the national champs.
Four wrestlers and two officials will be representing Ekurhuleni at the nationals that will take place in Cape Town from October 5 to 8.
The team manager, Israel Kgeletsane, said: “We are thankful to the parents, wrestlers and coaches for a job well done and the support.
“Working with children isn’t easy as it requires patience, but working hard together we have been able to produce positive results.”
The club is asking for donations towards transportation and other necessities for the trip.
