Tsakani – Kwatsaduza Recreational Concepts celebrated its Sports Code Launch on Friday at Tsakani Stadium.
According to the organisation, their goal is to introduce as ‘many sports codes’ as possible in the township.
The launch included competitions and demonstrations from various sports codes such as netball, soccer, tennis, boxing, golf, karate and basketball.
The founder of the organisation, Monwabisi Jaft, said there’s still a gap in sports in the townships.
“Soccer and netball continue to dominate in the township though those are not the only sporting codes we have in South Africa.
“The plan is to host this event annually whereby we bring together various sporting codes to expose our players, learners and our children to the various sporting codes that are out there.
“For this event we have invited local teams and schools,” he said.
Tsakani’s wrestling club will partake in tournament
The NPC was established in 2019 and they plan on hosting the event two times a month with the support of schools and other organisations.
Ward 83 Clr Slindokuhle Pike urged parents to encourage their children to participate in sports.
She said Tsakani is faced with a high rate of substance abuse and crime.
“Children get bored, so participation in sports will keep them busy.
“We are trying to have different house clubs that will cater to various sporting codes, especially in schools.
“Over time we will be hosting tournaments and so forth,” explained Pike.
Former IBO Bantamweight Champion Mxolisi Nombewu also attended the event to motivate young sportsmen and women.
He stated that sport is a great tool for keeping children away from drugs and bullies.
“With boxing, you make it exciting.
“You must work hard, stay focused and be disciplined, that’s how you become a champion.
“Boxing can be used to learn self-defence techniques as means to protect yourself from bullies.
“Especially for girls,” he said.
