Elders in Kwatsaduza celebrated

Police urge residents to protect the elderly.

Duduza police supported a campaign to raise awareness about the care of the elderly.

The event was held under the theme Together for Elderly Care Awareness at Zanele Mbeki Frail Care Centre.

Duduza police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka said this is a multi-stakeholder engagement on raising awareness in caring for the elderly. Over 2 500 elders from different centres in Kwatsaduza were in attendance.

The event was made possible by the members of EMPD, the Department of Health, Community Safety and NGOs.

Manaka said it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the elderly.

“Lets us all join hands to make sure that they are comfortable and all their needs are met,” he explained.

SAPS reiterated its commitment to the protection of the elderly against GBV and other criminal elements.

“It is unfortunate that there are elders who stay alone and are targeted by criminals. We are encouraging anyone who witnesses an elder being abused to come forward and report the matter to the police.

“We are encouraging those who are vulnerable to be moved to elderly centres in their areas,” he added.

Senior citizens were the VIPs of the event and were showered with gifts.
