The Junior Star Academy Karate needs donations to help grade their karatekas.
Sakhi Kgapola, sport coordinator of the Ward 79 committee said a lack of funds can discourage young athletes.
“Our children are really excited to participate, but we don’t have the right equipment to train.
“They don’t even have the proper gear to participate. It is a heavy burden,” said Kgapola.

The Junior Star Academy Karate, which trains at the Sanco building in Extension Eight (proper), has arranged for karate grading for the young sports people on Saturday.
The athletes are between seven and 15 years old.
“There is no promotion of sport without money and we appeal to business people to sponsor us. Government also needs to get involved.
“We also encourage parents to show their children support and come to these events, even if they don’t have money. Children are encouraged by that,” said Kgapola.

The club’s coach, Eric Gxina, said he would love to have a well-fitted gym in which to teach the youngsters.
“I love what I do and I am passionate. The things that set us back can be fixed if we get financial support.
“I would not want to see any of these children being left behind because they can’t pay a fee to get graded,” he said.
The ward is, however, doing well with at least six active sporting codes. For more information about the club and how to support them, contact Kgapola on 071 993 8753.
