Raising awareness through sport
Eyethu Badminton hosted GBV and Aids awareness event.
Eyethu Badminton Development in conjunction with Duduza Cricket Club hosted an HIV/Aids and GBV awareness event on National World Aids Day, on Thursday at the Duduza Multipurpose Centre.
The event was aimed at educating children on the causes, prevention and treatment of the virus and GBV while having fun and playing sports.

Guest speaker Lindokuhle Mhira said: “It is important for children to know the different types of abuse such as sexual, emotional, psychological and physical abuse and how frequent abuse is.”
Mhira said different setups are what causes abuse, such as the cultural, economic and political setups.
“We can prevent abuse by creating more awareness campaigns to put the message across.
“We should also stop stereotyping gender roles,” said Mhira.

Mhira said people should start supporting and believing victims of abuse as a lack of support causes depression and some victims end up committing suicide.
After the speech, senior badminton team members taught others badminton skills.
Different organisations were in attendance.
