Jabulane Mashinini crushes his top Comrades Marathon time
Jabulane Mashinini walked away with a silver medal which adds to his collection.
Kwatsaduza – Local runners took up the challenge to compete in the 2023 Comrades Marathon 87km run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
The race, which started at 05:30, was won by the North West runner Tete Dijana who was defending his title with a record-breaking time of 5:13:58.
Bringing it closer to home, Jabulane Mashinini held the flag by crashing his set goal of 7 hours and 25 minutes by more than 10 minutes.
He walked away with a silver medal, which adds to his collection of six silver medals including a Bill Rowan medal he received at his first Comrades Marathon.

Mashinini is the top runner in Kwatsaduza. This was his seventh Comrades Marathon.
Speaking to African Reporter after the race, Jabulane said he is proud of himself for pushing himself to achieve his set goal.
“When I was halfway through the marathon at 43km my body was still in the game, I knew that I can still make it and reach my set time.
“I could not believe it when I reached the finish line and my time was 7:11:31, which was 14 minutes quicker than planned,” he said.

The runner added that the most challenging part of the run was Bothas Hill, as it is an uphill.
“It reminded me that it is important as a runner to include hill work in the training sessions. I invested my energy on this part of the race because many fall off due to the strenuous steep,” he said.
Jabulane added that what you feel on the day is very important because it sets the tone for the race.
“I made sure that I wasn’t stressed,” he said.
