Mhaule will be going to Italy later this month

The Gauteng Department of Sports will pay for everything the players need, however, they won’t have an allowance.

Kwa-Thema – Leon Mhaule (16) was selected to go to Italy for the seventh edition of the Giochi del Tricolore (Tricolour Games) as part of Team Gauteng.

The Giochi del Tricolore started in 1997 to celebrate the bicentenary of the Italian Tricolour flag that was born in Reggio Emilia. This event is an amateur sports competition and a social, educational and intercultural opportunity for young people.

The programme unearths talent from the grassroots level, developing that talent and ensuring the athletes can participate at regional, provincial and international levels.

Athletes and players who represented the province and the country are not eligible to participate, creating an avenue for new talent to emerge.

Leon Mhaule (16) is one of 131 players who will represent Gauteng in Italy.

Mhaule is a Selcourt Estate soccer player, a team playing in the Springs LFA league. The event will run from July 24 to 30 in Reggio Emelia, and the players will leave on July 22.

Selcourt Estate coach Bongani Goodwill Nkosi said, “To think the talent was spotted in Kwa-Thema sports showed we are doing something good as club coaches. The journey was never easy, but we managed to soldier on, and I’m proud of Mhaule.”

The Gauteng Department of Sports will pay for everything players need, such as flights and accommodation.

However, the players won’t have an allowance. Nkosi has asked those with the financial means to help him by calling 072 881 1971.
