Nkumbulo Secondary School chess team win district chess competition
The team was assembled last year in August and has to date blossomed into a team capable of outwitting their opponents.
Kwa-Thema – The Nkumbulo Secondary School chess team was crowned winners in the D5 Gauteng East Schools Chess Tournament.
The U19 mixed section was hosted at Nigel Secondary School.
Team coach Thabiso Makgoga said he is proud of the dedicated players for fighting to the end and coming out victorious.
“This win means a lot to me as it was not easy to build this team, especially with the lack of resources.
“I had to buy boards from my pockets after identifying their eagerness, hunger, and passion to know more about the game.
“I was motivated by their consistency at practice, hard work, and evident improvement from the dedicated players,” he added.
Thabiso is encouraging public schools, especially in the township to support the young talents.
The team was assembled last year in August and has blossomed into a team capable of outwitting their opponents and coming out top in a tough group with the likes of Veritas College, Nigel Secondary School, Hugenote, and Buhlebemfundo to mention a few.
