Two visually impaired girls selected in shotput

Tumelo Mabhena was selected for the T44 shotput and javelin.

Kwa-Thema – The Kwa-Thema Disability Academy attended the second Gauteng Sports for the Physically Disabled Para athletes trials at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday.

These trials were to qualify for the Toyota National Championship in Bloemfontein next March. Two visually impaired sportswomen from the team, Reneilwe Magashule and Domira Kanaka, were selected for the U14 shotput.

Tumelo Mabhena was selected for the T44 shotput and javelin. Coach Aubrey Mathibela said he was proud of how the three performed at the trials, which led to their selection for next year’s nationals.

“They did well, and from now on, we’ll be putting in more practice to make sure they are ready for when the time comes,” he said.

Mathibela said he was grateful to Nkosiyethu Galela, a teacher from Qedusizi Primary School, who identified Magashule and Kanaka.

“We wouldn’t have experienced such talent if it wasn’t for Galela,” he concluded.
