Kwa-Thema – Makhosazana Khumalo in Grade Four placed third in the Provincial Math Olympiad. Khumalo was representing Nkabinde Primary School and Gauteng East.

Her teacher, Kurhula Ngwenya, said they’ve been working hard since June to prepare for this competition.

“As a school, we got her tools to prepare and we couldn’t have done this without her parents who’ve been supportive throughout,” Ngwenya said.

She said Khumalo is the only Grade Four learner from the Gauteng East township schools who did well at the Olympiad.

“I am proud as my work is now recognised,” concluded Ngwenya.

Khumalo was celebrated by the whole school at an assembly on Monday morning.

The prize-giving ceremony took place on Saturday at Laerskool Haakdoorn in Pretoria. Khumalo was awarded two medals, a third place trophy, a tablet, a calculator and a bag.
