Residents encouraged to apply for deemed indigent programme

It will ensure that persons and households classified as indigent have access to basic services.

Kwa-Thema – Residents were encouraged to prioritise changing ownership of their houses during a community information session on Wednesday.

This will allow them to have access to the City of Ekurhuleni’s indigent relief programme.

Officials from the departments of finance, health, social department, and justice along with pro bono organisations educated residents about the importance of changing ownership of houses.

Ward 74 Clr Thulane Simelane said they have identified that many houses in the area are still registered in the name of deceased individuals.

“Unfortunately this prevents those occupying the houses from applying for the indigent programmes and other services offered by the city. The city has since rolled out the indigent programme for the 2023-2024 financial year.

“This allows all residents with houses with a value of R500 000 and less to apply for the indigent programme,” he said.

It will ensure that persons and households classified as indigent have access to basic services. It is a tool of intervention to alleviate the plight and to encourage indigent households to live within affordable consumption levels.

Attendees were educated about the process they have to follow to change ownership of houses.
