Lefa Ifa Secondary School performs better than in other years

Out of the 215 who had registered, only 210 wrote exams and five dropped out for different reasons.

Kwa-Thema – With the #2023matricresults released on Thursday evening, was Lefa Ifa the most improved school in Kwa-Thema, Kwatsaduza and Gauteng East.

Matriculants collected their results on Friday morning and it was all smiles as the school improved from 53.4% to 75.2%.

The top achiever at the school, Sifiso Nxumalo, obtained five distinctions. Lefa Ifa produced 67 bachelor’s passes, 35 admissions to diploma and 16 admissions to higher certificates.

School principal Disekeletšo Saboshego said, “We have put in a lot of work. There were days whereby we slept at school with our learners going through the night.”

Saboshego said she was proud of the school’s performance and that they produced quality over quantity.

“We will work hard this year to get at least an 85% pass rate,” she said.

There are eight pending results at the school and Saboshego is confident that the eight learners have passed.

Meanwhile, Zimisele Secondary School has dropped to 76.7%, being at the sixth position of the seven local schools.

This comes after the school was at the top of the seven schools in Kwa-Thema in 2022, having obtained 92.8%.

The school has 23 distinctions with 55 bachelor’s passes, 36 admissions to diplomas and 25 admissions to higher certificates.

The top achiever of the school, Nkhensani Lekula, obtained six distinctions – in life orientation, mathematics, accounting, business studies, IsiZulu and English.

Nkhensani Lekula, Banele Mabaso and Qiniso Ndlovu are happy with their results.

Lekula missed a seventh distinction in economics with 2%. School principal Thembinkosi Msimang said they never anticipated the drop in the results.

“Three of our classes received pass rates of 80% and above, however, we had one problematic class which had over 50% of learners passing and that led to our drop-in results,” he continued.

Msimang said they had cases of learners with learning difficulties and the school referred them to a special school.

“We referred such learners as soon as we identified them, but due to them not finding space in special schools, they ended up with us until they reached matric,” he said.

Msimang said as part of their measures to help take them to the top again, they will meet with parents to get them involved in teaching and learning.

Kenneth Masekela Secondary School is currently the top school in Kwa-Thema, with an overall pass of 89.0%. They improved from last year’s 83.5%

The school had set itself a 90% target and was only short of 0.1% to reach it. The school has 88 bachelor passes, 62 diploma passes and 37 higher certificate passes, with 23 learners to have failed.

Out of the 215 who had registered, only 210 wrote exams and five dropped out for different reasons.

“I believe we could have reached our set target had all those registered written,” said the school’s acting principal, Glory Jiyane.

She said she is happy with what they have achieved, although they faced issues as a school such as load-shedding, water cuts, community protests and an unstable SMT caused by not having a principal.

Nothando Shongwe celebrates her results at Tlakula.

She also thanked the Grade 12 teachers, saying this would not have been possible without them.

Tlakula Secondary School is among the schools with a dropped pass rate, dropping to fourth place of the seven schools.

The school achieved 89.7% last year, compared to 85.1%. Principal Nonhlanhla Thembekwayo said although she is happy they stayed above 80% she is disappointed with the drop.

“Psycho-sociological issues mainly caused our drop. The teachers only found out later in the year that there were learners who only received their only daily meals at school. That disturbed them a lot and their concentration,” she said.

Thembekwayo said they will identify such learners as early as they can so that they can be able to assist as a school.

The other results in Kwa-Thema are:

  • Phulong Secondary School at the second position at 86.3%.
  • Laban Motlhabi Secondary School, position three at 85.9%.
  • Nkumbulo Secondary School is in position five at 80%.
  • Lefa-Ifa remains at the bottom in Kwa-Thema.
