Local girl produces top marks in IEB matric results

Eight distinctions in the bag!

Kwa-Thema – Nkanyezi Masemola (18) topped the achievers list with eight distinctions in the IEB exams.

The St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls learner achieved eight distinctions (computer applications technology, accounting, English, Isizulu, life orientation, mathematics, physical science and further studies mathematics).

“I was a bit surprised when I got my final results, but I was working towards it. I studied constantly, and practised maths,” she said.

The top achiever said she had a lot of support from her family.

“My mom was the one I went to when I felt stressed,” she added.

Masemola has been at the top in every grade.

“There is a certain amount of pressure because everyone expects me to do well all the time. But it is good because it reminds me that I can do well,” she explained.

The maths fanatic will pursue a BSc in Actuarial Science at Wits University.

“It was an easy choice because it is all about numbers. I love maths and I enjoy stats,” she explained.

She said she is looking forward to meeting new people, as she explores the world of tertiary education.

Masemola encourages learners to set goals for their future.

“Dream big! Do not settle for the bare minimum. If your goals are big they will dictate what kind of effort you need to put in to achieve those goals,” she concluded.
