Kristo Inkosi celebrates 70 years

Kristo Inkosi Catholic Church celebrated its 70th anniversary on Saturday.

More than 400 members and friends gathered at Kristo Inkosi Catholic Church to celebrate its 70th anniversary on February 16.

The occasion was marked by a celebratory mass led by Archbishop Buti Thlagale, OMI Archbishop of Johannesburg Diocese. Thlagale congratulated the church, also commending them for their dedication to the community.

“I commend Father Chaka for building a church community that provides youth and families with numerous activities and educational opportunities,” said Thlagale.

As you celebrate this occasion, I hope you reflect on the many accomplishments achieved through years of dedicated service to the community.”

Parish priest Father Chaka Motanyane said they planted seven fruit trees, each representing 10 years of Kristo Inkosi’s existence.

With the significance of a tree providing shade and shelter, Motanyane said the church has provided many people during the struggle, including the youth, with shelter.

“As the tree offers fruit, we have provided both physical and spiritual needs to many people over the years of our existence, and we will continue to do so in the future,” said Motanyane.

He added the celebration was a success, reflecting on the positive influence the church had on the community.

“I wanted our community to celebrate with us, not forgetting how important the church has been in developing young people.”

Motanyane, who has been with the church for almost 17 years, has the youth at the centre of his heart, expressing he looks forward to continuing to empower them for the good of the church.

“Having served in many parishes, I noticed that young people are not involved with church affairs, but here we allow them to be involved and have their views be heard,” he said.

“My dream is to build a world-class youth centre, with recreational activity where young people can be empowered.”

The celebration saw 45 candidates receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation administered by Tlhagale. Motanyane thanked the congregants and those responsible for ensuring the success of the day.
