EMPD keeps an eye on safety at schools

The Social Crime Prevention Unit also searched MOM Sibone Secondary School, Esibonelwesihle Secondary School and Brakpan High School.

Kwatsaduza – EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit officers recently continued engaging schools on scholar transport and scholar patrol training in Nigel and Duduza.

They did this as a part of the ongoing EMPD road safety awareness campaign throughout the CoE.

Officers visited the Nigel area’s laerskools Hannes Vissagie and Tini Voster to talk to learners in scholar patrol training, allowing learners to control traffic and get first-hand experience in implementing the rules of the road.

The officers then went to Thakgalang Primary School in Duduza to further engage and train learners on scholar patrol.

Lastly, the officers inspected driver and vehicle fitness at the school. The EMPD will continue rolling out scholar transport inspections to ensure the operators comply with the National Road Traffic Act (Act 93 of 1996).

The unit also went to Duduza and Brakpan to search MOM Sibone Secondary School, Esibonelwesihle Secondary School and Brakpan High School.

With schools becoming a hub for criminal activities, the EMPD and law enforcement agencies intensified operations on school searches to curb unlawful activities at schools.

The department rolled out this initiative to assure parents that their children are safe and that teaching and learning can continue peacefully.

They summoned all the learners outside their classrooms and did a body search. Meanwhile, in the classroom, the K9 Unit sniffer dog searched school bags for illicit substances and dangerous weapons.

Officers confiscated plastic bags of cannabis, vapes, matches, scissors and cigarettes. The EMPD will continue to hit schools by surprise to guarantee the teachers’, staff and learners’ safety.
