Learners do their part to help protect the environment

This year’s theme was Planet vs Plastic.

Tsakani – Learners from JE Malepe Secondary School celebrated Earth Day on Thursday.

The Grade 10 and 11 natural science learners used the opportunity to plant new vegetation and educate others about protecting the environment.

“I have always been passionate about the environment. There is no better way to ensure that the children take care of the school and the environment than to make them part of the process of rehabilitation.

“As they plant these new trees they feel responsible for them. They will look after them,” explained educator Lerato Ndlovu.

The plants were donated to the school by the Department of Agriculture.

Earth Day is an annual event commemorated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

This year’s theme is Planet vs Plastic. The theme aims to advocate for widespread awareness of the health risks of plastics, and rapidly phased out single-use plastics.
