Lesotho highland water project gets underway

The city assures there should not be a problem with water levels during the project, but asks residents to use water sparingly.

The Maintenance of the Lesotho Highlands Tunnel (LHWP) started on October 1 and runs until March 31, 2025.

The Lesotho Highlands Water Commission, with oversight from the Lesotho Highlands Development Agency (LHDA) and the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), will manage the project, which is aimed at ensuring water supply stability in the country.

Meanwhile, Rand Water gives assurance that municipal water supply will remain stable during the Lesotho project, as dams in the Integrated Vaal River System are at full capacity.

Despite this, the City of Ekurhuleni still urges residents and businesses to observe water conservation protocols during this sensitive period to avoid potential interruptions.

The city will continue with efforts to reduce non-revenue water through leak repairs, infrastructure upgrades, and pressure reduction strategies while giving residents regular updates on the maintenance of the Lesotho Highlands Tunnel.
