Avoid applying brakes abruptly as it may cause the motor vehicle to skid or lose control.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has noted with concern the significant number of accidents recorded on the wet roads and has urged motorists to take precautions if heavy rains persist to avoid more risks of incidents.

Motorists have been urged to adhere to the following road safety rules:

  3. Headlights should be on
  4. Reduce speed
  5. Maintain a safe following distance
  6. Ensure tyres have a good tread depth
  7. Avoid applying brakes abruptly as it may cause the motor vehicle to skid or lose control
  8. Avoid water puddles, low lying bridges and lookout for potholes
  9. Drivers should apply patience leading to vehicle pile-up or traffic congestion
  10. Avoid using a cellphone while driving

Motorists have also been urged to be vigilant at all times as they are responsible for their own safety.
