Sonqoba Simunye Men’s Club pays tribute to 1956 Women’s March with special Women’s Day initiative
In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Sonqoba Simunye Men's Burial Club honoured the legacy of the 1956 Women’s March by celebrating today’s women on National Women’s Day.
DUDUZA – Sonqoba Simunye Men’s Burial Club joined South Africans in commemorating National Women’s Day.
“We honour the unyielding spirit of the 20 000 women who, in 1956, marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against unjust legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government’s control over the movement of black women in urban areas.
Today, 69 years later, we honour and celebrate that legacy, resilience, strength, dignity, and determination by giving 100 women drivers a rose and a pre-packed snack pack.
As we commemorate and pay tribute under this year’s theme, ‘Building resilient economies for all’, we make a clarion call: let this year’s celebrations be about recommitting to a South Africa where women are safe, valued, empowered, and central to our country’s renewal,” said Andy Mpye of the club.
