Ekurhuleni police remove 66 unsafe taxis from roads

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Taxi Task Team, working with Gauteng Traffic Police and the SAPS, impounded 66 unroadworthy minibus taxis during a week-long operation targeting non-compliant vehicles across the city.

The EMPD Taxi Task Team, in collaboration with the Gauteng Traffic Police and SAPS, impounded 66 unroadworthy minibus taxis during a week-long joint operation in Tsakane, Germiston and Boksburg.

The initiative was part of Operation Shanela, aimed at improving compliance among minibus taxi operators throughout the City of Ekurhuleni.

During inspections, officers found numerous violations, including vehicles operating without valid permits or operator cards.

Several taxis were also in poor mechanical condition, failing to meet the safety standards outlined in the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

All 66 minibus taxis were impounded and taken to the Benoni Provincial Pound.

The EMPD reminded taxi owners and drivers that it is a legal requirement under the National Road Traffic Act to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and display valid number plates before operating on public roads.

“These operations aim to improve compliance and ensure the safety of commuters and schoolchildren who rely on public and school transport daily,” the EMPD said.
