Sports and culture unite Kwa-Thema community in crime awareness event

Sector 1 hosts a fun-filled awareness day promoting unity and positive lifestyles through sport.

KWA-THEMA – The Kwa-Thema SAPS Sector 1, under the leadership of station commander Colonel Nhlanhla Kunene, hosted a successful sports and cultural awareness fun day to strengthen police-community relations and promote crime prevention through active living.

The event took place at Fred Habedi Primary School and brought together various stakeholders including Kwa-

Thema SAPS, the CPF, the Department of Education and local NPOs. A total of 137 participants attended. Sector 1 chairperson Ellen Lekau welcomed everyone and introduced the stakeholders.

In his remarks, school principal Themba Vamba expressed gratitude to the organisers for choosing the school as a venue and commended the partnership between the school and the Sector 1 Crime Forum.

Sector manager Sergeant Percy Mabanga addressed the community, explaining that the purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the importance of sports, arts and culture in shaping positive lifestyles and keeping young people away from crime.

The cultural segment of the event showcased vibrant performances from local groups, including:
• Traditional dance by Fred Habedi Primary School Cultural Group and Amashishi from Ukukhanya Kwenkanyezi
• Mapantsula dance by Next Generation Pantsulas and Royal Blaq Entertainment
• Spiritual dance by Royal Blaq Entertainment

All participating cultural groups received certificates of participation and appreciation for their contributions.

Sports highlights:
The sports section featured exciting matches that showcased community spirit and friendly rivalry:

Rugby: Sharks beat Lions 35–30 in a heated match, taking home the floating trophy and gold medals.

Netball: SAPS edged Sector One 7–6 to claim the trophy and gold medals.

Soccer: Kwa-Thema SAPS defended their title with a 2–1 victory over Sector 1, securing the championship trophy and gold medals once again.

An energetic aerobics session led by Themba Masike and Moketsi “Sparks” Moagi added fun and excitement to the day. Both facilitators received certificates of appreciation.

In his vote of thanks, Mabanga thanked all stakeholders, participants and community members for their support, noting that such initiatives help build unity, promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen collaboration between the police and the community.
