Kwa-Thema siblings launch media house to empower youth and transform township narratives
Two young creatives from Kwa-Thema are using storytelling and film to challenge negative township stereotypes and promote positive change among the youth.
KWA-THEMA – Two siblings from Kwa-Thema Ext 3 are combining passion and creativity to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.
Owami Bhengu (18) and Bongile Sicholweni (17) launched their own media production house in July, aiming to address challenges faced by township youth through film and other media projects.
Sicholweni explained their mission: “Lethuxolo is bringing peace to our area. We want young people to know they will not benefit from drugs, fighting, or carrying guns, as those choices lead to jail, hospital, or even death. Our productions – movies, short clips, series and other media – teach about these dangers and encourage youth to focus on their talents.”
Bhengu added that mainstream media often presents a narrow view of township life, focusing on crime, poverty and violence, while overlooking success and resilience.
“We aim to change that perspective and show what is possible for people from the township,” he said.

The duo has already written and produced Side Chick and Thando Lweqiniso and is preparing a series called Spiyo Gangsters. Each production carries valuable lessons about life choices, GBV, bullying and the importance of building a strong, safe community.
Sicholweni highlighted the pressures township youth face after matric, including unemployment and caring for siblings, which can push some into crime or drugs. Their goal is to inspire young people to make positive choices, embrace their talents, and support each other.
The media house also provides opportunities for aspiring actors. Members of the public can submit one-minute monologues via WhatsApp for a chance to be cast in their productions.
Episodes are shared on social media, and Bhengu and Sicholweni urge the community to support their work by streaming the content online.
They also seek sponsorship and financial support to expand their impact and create job opportunities for township youth, giving them skills, purpose, and a safe space to grow.
