Seven distinctions for Kwa-Thema matric star

An 18-year-old learner from White City, Kwa-Thema, has proven that dedication and self-belief can yield exceptional results after achieving seven distinctions in the 2025 matric examinations.

Kwa-Thema’s White City community is celebrating the success of an 18-year-old matriculant who achieved distinctions in mathematics, life sciences, geography, tourism, life orientation, English first additional language, and isiZulu home language.
Philisile Khumalo described her achievement as both joyful and unexpected, especially after feeling uncertain about her performance in mathematics.
“I am very happy about my results. They were a bit unexpected because I felt like I didn’t do well, especially in mathematics, though I worked really hard,” she said.
The former Tlakula Secondary School learner said discipline and careful time management shaped her academic journey.
She studied ahead of teachers, completed homework at school, and dedicated her home time to revision became key strategies.

She also attended extra classes, and online lessons played an important role in strengthening her understanding of the subjects.
Despite the success, the journey was not without challenges.
Burnout and exhaustion from balancing academics with everyday life made some days particularly difficult.
“There were days when it felt almost impossible to get any work done because of how exhausting the workload became,” she shared.
Looking ahead, the achiever hopes to pursue a career in the health sciences field, although the exact path is still being considered.
To current learners, she offered words of encouragement: “Set clear goals and focus on improving yourself. It’s okay to have dreams that seem too big or unrealistic to others. What matters is what you believe in. Matric is hard, but it is not impossible.”
