Man faces charges after explosives seizure in Everest informal settlement
The 38-year-old suspect was arrested in an Everest informal settlement for being in possession of material that law enforcement says is often associated with illegal mining activities.
The EMPD and the Springs SAPS arrested a 38-year-old man for the possession of explosives in the Everest informal settlement on June 17.
According to the EMPD, officers received information regarding a man in possession of explosives in the area.
“Acting on the information received, officers proceeded to the informal settlement where they identified a man matching the description provided, carrying a black bag.
“Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspect attempted to flee the scene; however, he was swiftly intercepted and searched.

“During the search, officers recovered 11 superpower blasting cartridges, 11 cap fuses, and two detonator fuses, all commonly associated with illegal mining activities,” the EMPD said.
An explosives expert and members of the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) were summoned to the scene to process and secure the recovered items.
“The suspect was arrested and detained at Springs Police Station, facing charges of possession of explosives. He is expected to appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon,” the EMPD said.
