KwaThema student selected for prestigious UK teacher exchange programme

Final-year education student Sibusiso Nkosi has been selected for an international teacher exchange programme in the United Kingdom and is appealing for support to help fund the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

KwaThema – Sibusiso Nkosi (24) is preparing for an opportunity that could shape not only his future as an educator but also the classrooms he hopes to one day lead.

The final-year Bachelor of Education student at the University of Zululand has been selected to participate in the Teacher and Cultural Exchange Programme between the university and the University of the West of England in the United Kingdom.

Majoring in mathematics and life sciences, Nkosi said he is passionate about education and aspires to become an educator who contributes meaningfully both locally and internationally.

“I want to become a teacher who brings global knowledge back home and uses it to improve teaching and learning in South African classrooms,” he said.

Nkosi learnt about the opportunity through official communication from the University of Zululand, then submitted a motivation letter and underwent a competitive selection process.

Applicants were assessed on their academic performance and their ability to demonstrate why they should represent the institution internationally.

“Only a limited number of students were selected, making the opportunity even more meaningful,” he said.

The exchange programme is part of an international collaboration between the University of Zululand and the University of the West of England, which began in 2022.

It aims to strengthen teacher education through intercultural learning, innovative teaching methods, inclusive education and classroom collaboration between South African and UK student teachers.

Receiving news of his selection was both exciting and emotional.

“I felt honoured and grateful. The journey was not easy because I faced financial and administrative challenges, including difficulties obtaining my academic transcript while dealing with outstanding fees.

“There were moments of uncertainty, but I kept believing that perseverance would pay off,” he added.

As the programme is self-funded, Nkosi now faces the challenge of raising funds to cover travel, accommodation, visa costs, and other programme-related expenses.

He has approached various organisations and foundations for assistance, but says securing funding has proved difficult.

“Many organisations do not fund international teacher exchange programmes, but I remain committed because I understand the value of this opportunity for my development as a future educator.”

Nkosi is particularly looking forward to experiencing different teaching approaches in mathematics and life sciences while engaging with students and educators from another country.

He also hopes to share South African indigenous knowledge systems while learning from international education practices.

“This experience will expose me to international teaching standards and innovative classroom methods that I can bring back to South Africa.

“I also want to combine global teaching approaches with our indigenous knowledge systems to create more meaningful learning experiences for learners,” Nkosi cited.

Beyond benefiting his own career, Nkosi believes the programme will have a positive impact on fellow educators and learners in his community.

“Through the knowledge and skills I intend to share on his return,” he mentioned.

Reflecting on his journey, he said the experience has strengthened his faith, resilience and determination.

“I have learnt that challenges are part of the journey, but they should not determine the outcome.

“Financial circumstances should never stop someone from pursuing their dreams,” he emphasised.

“Your dreams are valid regardless of where you come from. Prepare yourself, stay consistent, believe in your abilities and never allow your background to limit your potential.”

Nkosi is appealing to members of the public, businesses and organisations to support his fundraising campaign.

Those who are unable to contribute financially are encouraged to share his campaign to help it reach a wider audience. Nkosi may be contacted on 060 451 9321.
