Kwa-Thema – Olwethu Dhlamini (14) is a passionate netball player who has her sights set on taking the sport to the highest level.

Dhlamini, who plays as a goal shooter, says one of the biggest joys of her position is helping her team through scoring goals.

“Playing as a goal shooter is exciting because you get the joy of scoring for your team,” she said.

She started playing netball at the age of seven after becoming fascinated by the excitement and fast pace of live matches and international tournaments.

Her first experience on the court was a mixture of nerves and excitement, but with encouragement from her mother, sister, and coach, she continued to develop her skills and confidence.

Dhlamini says being a young netball player has not been without challenges. She has had to cope with the physical demands of the sport, strict court rules and the mental pressure that comes with competitive matches.

“However, these challenges have strengthened my determination,” she said

One of her most memorable moments is scoring winning goals in the final seconds of a close match.

“There is a sudden rush of joy as teammates run over to celebrate together,” she added.

To improve her game, Dhlamini works on footwork, hand-eye coordination, body positioning, shooting accuracy, dodging and tight marking. She believes teamwork, personal growth, physical fitness and the joy of competition continue to motivate her.

Her sporting role model is former SPAR Proteas captain Bongiwe “Bongi” Msomi, whom she admires for her journey from KwaZulu-Natal to becoming an international netball leader.

“I have ambitious goals for my future, and I hope to see netball increase its global participation and secure a place at the Olympic Games by 2032.

“I also see myself playing professionally one day,” she said.

Away from the court, Dhlamini enjoys listening to music, dancing and studying, with her schoolwork remaining a major priority.

She says netball has shaped her by teaching her teamwork, focus and physical fitness, while also helping her develop communication and problem-solving skills.

Her advice to young girls interested in netball is to master the basics, learn the rules, practise regularly and, most importantly, enjoy the sport with their teammates.

Dhlamini hopes to be remembered as a player with a fierce drive, smart decision-making and strong teamwork.

“I always put 100% into helping my squad win,” she said.
