4Pipe Sundays has become a recognised entertainment event, drawing large crowds from KwaTsaDuza and surrounding areas while creating something unique.

The fifth anniversary of 4Pipe Sundays will take place on September 27 at Bahama Bar in Kwa-Thema, with the organiser Thamsanqa ‘Hectic SA’ Masengwane reflecting on the journey which began on August 20, 2022.

Speaking to African Reporter, Masengwane explained that the idea for 4Pipe Sundays came up when the team was organising the annual Mama of All Parties, which will celebrate its 18th anniversary next year.

He said it was during this period that the team developed the idea of creating something unique and different, while leaving people uncertain about what 4Pipe Sundays really was.

The name itself added to the mystery of 4Pipe Sundays, as people wondered whether ‘4Pipe’ meant hookah pipes or cars.

According to Masengwane, using ballers as the hosts has helped some people to understand the concept behind it.

The first event took place at Nomndayi Garden, then moved to Local Lifestyle, and after that to Bahama Bar.

He shared that the first 4Pipe Sundays set the trend for future events, as the audience’s reaction encouraged the team to develop the concept further.

One of the most interesting moments in the history of 4Pipe Sundays happened on Boxing Day in 2022, when the venue was already filled by 17:00.

“Seeing what we’ve been praying for come to life melted our hearts,” said Masengwane.

Masengwane added that the event began to attract various crowds and reached far beyond Kwa-Thema and KwaTsaduza.

He said the increase in attendees made it necessary to find larger venues for 4Pipe Sundays, especially with celebrities invited to host the events.

“We now make celebrities host, and that means we are going to get more people from outside to attend. Hence, we needed more space to accommodate everyone willing to attend,” he said.

As the organiser, Masengwane expressed that the event has opened up many opportunities for members of the local creative industry, including DJs, photographers and videographers.

As the event has moved venues over the years, Masengwane emphasised that the relationship with former venues remains positive, as some venue owners keep attending the event.

Regarding the future development of 4Pipe Sundays, Masengwane noted that the team has some plans that it will keep secret.

“Believe me when I say we have nothing but big plans for 4Pipe Sundays. Next year this time, we will be somewhere doing it the biggest way we know how,” he said.

For those who have not yet attended 4Pipe Sundays, Masengwane has one message: “Uyaluza (you are missing out) shame.”

He said guests can expect an exclusive event featuring beautiful people, cars, a stylish setup, and a different energy from other events.
