Mayweathers injury stops fight

KwaThema - Local boxer Mxolisi "Mayweather" Nobewu's fight against Limpopo's Clitaus Mbele for the World Boxing Association (WBA) title was stopped on Friday night after Nobewu injured his shoulder in the second round.

The fight ended in a technical draw.

Nobewu’s coach and manager, Themba Zulu, explains that the boxer got into the ring with the intention of winning the fight from the first minute.

“We don’t know yet what could have caused his left shoulder to dislocate because he was physically and mentally prepared for this fight,” says Zulu.

He adds that Nobewu is currently undergoing medical treatment for his injury and he will be able to fight after he heals.

Nobewu says he is very disappointed that he couldn’t continue with the fight, but he has accepted that unexpected injuries occur, especially when you are doing a full contact sport.

“I will be back in the gym after 35 days, that’s what my doctor says and I shouldn’t have a problem fully recovering,” says Nobewu.

Zulu says he will be taking it easy with Nobewu for the rest of the year until he feels he’s ready for intense training.
