Molapo gears up for Comrades

Alcum Molapo, a member of the KwaThema Striders Athletics Club, participated in the Deloitte Marathon in Pretoria on February 25.

KwaThema – Molapo’s nickname is ‘Bus Driver’, as athletes who want to run a marathon in under four hours regularly follow him for guidance.

He is said to know how to control the pace of the run.

Molapo finished the Deloitte Marathon in 3:59:56.

“This year I will be running my first Comrades Marathon, with a target time of nine hours,” he says.

“The pressure on me is enormous, having no experience in the Comrades but hundreds of athletes will be depending on me to help them run less than nine hours.”

Molapo joined KwaThema Striders when the club was established in March 2008 under the auspices of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

He has never looked back since.

He is currently serving as the team’s public relations officer and always encourages healthy lifestyles and wellness.

Chairperson Maruping Kodisang and the executive committee encourage people to come and join the team for fitness.

Their weekly breakfast runs are highly popular and successful.

This year the club is focused on recruiting the youth, especially those of school-going age.

“It is the responsibility of all members to revitalise school athletics and continue to promote KwaThema as a brand through athletics as a sporting code of choice,” says Kodisang.

The club is also redoubling its efforts to find a sponsor for the team, despite the fact that 2017 was a relatively successful financial year.
