Teams fight for first prize in the Mbosh Tournament

“We are trying to keep them in school and active in sports so as to keep them busy and to stop them from participating in these activities.”

KwaThema- U-17 teams participating in the Mbosh Community Games played in the quarterfinals last weekend at KwaThema Stadium.

The tournament has been running for two years. This year it started in the first week of March and it saw 14 teams participating in the knock-out games.

Soccer coach Mkhonza Mkhonzana says the eight teams participated in the quarterfinals which saw Multi Falcons FC play against Early Birds FC to a 3-2 win.

“Junior Spinners played against Eleven Experience 0-0 draw and won with 8-7 in penalties.

“Valencia FC played to a 1-1 draw against Sunders United and won 5-4.

“Jealous Down logged horns with Home Defenders and won 2-0,” he says.

Mkhozana says the semi-finals will be held on Saturday at KwaThema Stadium and will see Valencia FC playing against Junior Spinners FC.

“Jealous Down FC will be playing against Mighty Falcons FC from 9am.

“The finals will be played at 3pm and the winners will be crowned.

“The legends from the community will crown the best player, midfielder, strike and defender and they will each walk away with a R1 000 voucher towards their school’s needs,” he says.

Mkhonzana says the tournament is aimed at fighting social ills which include drugs and crime.

“This group of players are at a fragile stage where they are easily swayed and influenced to participate in activities like crime and drugs.

“We are trying to keep them in school and active in sports so as to keep them busy and to stop them from participating in these activities.

“The tournament is hosted by Springs Local Football Association and a local business family (Moabelo family),” he says.
