Netball and tennis courts in KwaThema will be ready in two weeks

“We are hoping the community will protect them and use them to their own benefit”.

KwaThema – Sport has always played an important part in the community of KwaThema.

Over the years tennis and netball deteriorated even though the two sports used to dominate.

Many believed this was a result of the shortage of facilities to cater for the two sports, but that will be a thing of the past soon.

The city has constructed a netball and tennis court at the corner of Shabangu and Moshoeshoe streets.

The community liaison officer, Sindy Shabalala, says the project started in April involving eight residents from the ward.

“We are currently working on the final touches of the tennis court and will start with the construction of the netball court this week.

“We should be ready to hand over the two courts in two weeks.

“We have also worked with local sub-constructors and shared skills with them,” she says.

Sindy says one of the biggest challenges they faced during the inception of the project, was unemployed residents from other wards demanding to be employed.

“This was a small project aimed at empowering and offering employment opportunities to the residents of Ward 78,” she says.

The councillor of Ward 78, Zanele Nyakale, says she is hoping the community will not vandalise the facilities.

“It took us years to finally convince the municipality to set aside a budget for the two sports courts.

“We are hoping the community will protect them and use them to their own benefit,” she says.
