Wheelchair tennis in the spotlight

KwaThema Disabled Athletics' Simon Mbonani will participate in an interprovincial qualifier in Soweto next week.

KwaThema – Simon Mbonani (32) says he has put in many hours in preparation for the NetCare Interprovincial Tournament, in wheelchair tennis.

“I am really excited for the opportunity to show my skills.

“I will be happy if I make it to the semi-finals.”

The former basketball player is the only player from KwaThema to qualify for the tournament.

“I’ve been playing wheelchair tennis for the past three years and now I am ready to try something new.”

His short-term goal is to explore another sporting code.

He will be accompanied by his coach Victor Mosotho.

The event will take place on June 24 and June 25 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium in Soweto.

Coach Aubrey Mathibela, the club’s founder, still urges parents to allow their children to participate in sport in spite of any physical disability.

“I want them to see, through these athletes, that it is possible.

“The more we participate, the more opportunities we discover.”
