Women encouraged to take self-defence classes

“Women are not safe in their homes and communities. Through boxing and other defence classes, they will be able to fight.” - Themba Zul

KwaThema – Young people are encouraged to join the local Geo Maroon Boxing Club to keep fit and learn self-defence skills.

The team’s coach, Themba Zulu, says he is concerned about young people who are roaming the streets without being part of any sporting code.

“Sports teaches young people not only discipline, but also how to defend themselves in cases of emergency.

“We are calling especially on young women to learn how to defend themselves because we are seeing a growing number of women being abused, raped and killed on a daily basis.

“Women are not safe in their homes and communities.

“Through boxing and other defence classes, they will be able to fight,” he says.

Zulu is also calling on law enforcement officers to ensure the perpetrators are removed from the streets.
