Local dojo celebrates Len Barnes
“We are happy our fighters represented the area with pride and defended their 2017 titles.”
Duduza – Ferkkandos Karate Club hosted the Southern Africa Len Barnes Memorial Tournament at Faranani Multipurpose Centre recently.
The tournament, in remembering Len Barnes, saw the country’s nine provinces and neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Malawi and Lesotho, grace the event.
Event organiser and coach, Linda Ngubane, says they were proud to host the event in honour of the memory of Shihan Len Barnes.

“Len opened his first dojo in South Africa in 1961, and saw young people trained in the sport.
“We saw it necessary to host the event this year to showcase our talent to other dojos on the continent.
“We are happy our fighters represented the area with pride, and defended their 2017 titles.
“Kamogelo Nyepetse defended his title, and came out as the winner in the fighting division,” he said.

Ngubane said in the girls’ group, Mathapelo Sibeko finished in position two in fighting.
“Ntokozo Ngubane obtained position three in kata demonstration, and position three in kumite demonstration .
“Sihle Piyane obtained position four in the u-13 in fighting.
“Ndinga Dyongo finished in position four in fighting, while Temba Ndaba obtained position three in fighting u-10.
“Thamsanqa Mnisi earned position three in the u-12 fighting title.”
Ngubane said he was happy the event was a success, and that the young people were given an opportunity to learn more about the sport.
