Street Mile fun run/walk a success
“We are trying to groom young runners to become top runners, not only in the region, but in the country and even internationally."
KwaThema – People of all ages from Ekurhuleni participated in the second annual Street Mile fun run/walk held at KwaThema Stadium on Saturday morning.
The young runners challenged each other in the 1.6km run, while their parents and other local supporters participated in the 5km fun run/walk.
The run was organised by the Ulinda Athletics Club, in collaboration with the metro.
Event organiser Vincent Hlatswayo says the run was held to encourage young runners from Ekurhuleni to remain dedicated to the sport and to showcase their talent at a local area.
“This year we saw runners from Katlegong, Vosloorus, Tembisa, Thokoza, Daveyton and KwaThema participating.
“We are trying to groom young runners to become top runners, not only in the region, but in the country and even internationally.
“This year, we decided to involve the residents and parents to participate in the initiative for them to see what their children participate in as an extramural activity,” he explains.
Hlatswayo says he is happy about the turnout and support.
“Through such events, we are able to encourage a healthy lifestyle in our communities and in the process fight some of the lifestyle illnesses, like obesity and high blood pressure.
“We are able to interact with some of the parents of the runners on some of their needs, especially about our annual calendar,” he says.
