Runners form the Sunday Crew aims to overcome lockdown blues
On September 4, they will be participating in the SPAR Women's Virtual Challenge 2021.
Kwatsaduza – Aimed at promoting healthy living and overcoming lockdown blues, runners from Kwa-Thema Striders have come together to form the Sunday Crew, a fun walk and run initiative.
The runners who came up with the initiative were Phumla Mabena, Neo Moloto and Sibusiso Mthembu.
On September 4, they will be participating in the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge 2021.
For the upcoming event, they are inviting community members to join them.
Their first fun walk of 5km, 10km and 15km took place on August 9, which started from the Kwa-Thema Community Hall.

Several members from the Kwa-Thema Striders, community members and other sports groups were present to support this initiative.
Mabena said the goal is to host at least one fun walk per month.
She joined Kwa-Thema Striders in 2019.
“I love sport. It helps me to keep active, stay in shape but, most importantly, keep healthy. Anyone is welcome to join us for our next virtual challenge regardless of age or gender. We are truly excited and looking forward to it,” she said.
Runner from the Kwa-Thema Striders Sibongiseni Skosana said runners miss preparing for the Comrades Marathon.

The fun walk, however, gives them something to keep them occupied and to look forward to.
“With the fun walk, we are simply trying to motivate people to keep training. We know that Covid-19 has messed up a lot of things, especially sport-related and it has harmed the fitness of athletes and sportsmen and women of different categories.
“So we want to re-enforce the importance of training or being active.
“It is also a great way to get back to socialising, taking care of one’s health, as opposed to staying at home all the time which ultimately leads to overthinking and fatigue,” he explained.
