Local gym introduces self-defence classes

The club is inviting community members to join their daily sessions.

Kwa-Thema – Fitness enthusiasts are invited to join the Sharo Shampla Gym at BuliThando Park for a dose of fitness and self-defence classes.

Women are urged to join the self-defence classes held at BuliThando Park.

The gym has partnered with the Ekurhuleni Shotokan Karate Dojo for the introduction of self-defence classes, under the Pan Africanist Shotokan Karate-Do Federation.
The dojo is led by shihan Michael Cindi with the support of sensei George Moche and Alfred Mkhondwane.
Gym instructor Mduduzi Kubeka said the partnership is meant to empower the community.

“It is important to learn how others cater to their health, what kind of training they do and how they go about it.
“Through the collaboration, we are also introducing self-defence classes for women.
“These classes will teach them how to protect themselves against criminals and aims to protect them against GBV,” he said.

They exercise in the mornings, Monday to Friday, from 07:30 to 08:30 and from 17:00 to 18:00, Monday to Thursday.
Cindi said karate is for everyone no matter their age.
“Karate is not just a sport but a way of living.
“And I believe it can go a long way in our townships, especially with everything that’s currently happening in society.
“Hence we felt the need to bring it to the people,” he said.
