Mpumi is aiming for the stars

Mpumi is the first player from Kwa-Thema to receive an award from CSA

Kwa-Thema – A 17-year-old cricket player from Kwa-Thema Cricket Club, Mpumi Mashiloane has received her award from Cricket South Africa.

Mashiloane was playing in the U16 South African tournament in December where she became the player of the tournament.

She was playing for the Easterns team when they faced different provinces. Her award was delivered on Sunday.
Mashiloane is the first player from Kwa-Thema to be awarded by CSA.

“This makes me feel happy as it shows that I’ve been working hard. I have also reached my goal of putting Kwa-Thema Cricket Club on the map and I still have a long way to go,” she said.

Mashiloane said she hopes that this award will encourage young players and other players to work harder.

“To all athletes, when you want something, work hard on it; execute the plan. Players shouldn’t choose coaches. I have realised that different coaches have different experience and their pieces of advice will help them achieve great things,” Mashiloane said.

She said players should not stop working hard and should keep grinding.

Kwa-Thema Cricket Club women’s coach Mandla ‘Jamcam’ Nkosi said, “I would firstly like to thank Prince Thethe for the foundation he laid for us as a club.

“Also to a cricket legend, Thapelo Dintle who is also a former player in Kwa-Thema for being there for Mpumi while in Benoni. Dintle was one of the coaches and trainers for Mpumi during the tournament.”

Nkosi said as a club, they are very proud of Mpumi as she won this award.

“Mpumi started playing in the development team and is now playing for the Easterns and gets called at times for the national team.

“I hope this would then encourage parents to bring their daughters to come join the club,” Nkosi said.

He said they still struggle with girls, especially for the U13 and above and are calling for girls to come forward.
